1st EuChemS Chemistry in Life Sciences Division

Young Investigator Workshop 2021

1st EuChemS Chemistry in Life Sciences Division

Young Investigator Workshop

The Young Investigator Workshop of the EuChemS Chemistry in Life Sciences Division (YIW-LS) will provide a unique opportunity to young investigators at an early stage of their independent career to present their research and connect with other potential future leaders in the field. Starting from 2021, this annual event will be held to promote and recognize young investigators, who have been identified by the EuChemS member societies as rising stars in their respective country. The number of participants is typically limited to around 30 attendees, which ensures interactive exchange between all young investigators, also to support future collaboration and research networks within Europe.

When & Where

The 1st YIW-LS will be held as a virtual meeting on the 24th and 25th of May, 2021, and is organized as a satellite to the European Chemical Biology Symposium 2021 (ECBS2021). The event will be hosted by TU Vienna (Austria) in collaboration with the Austrian Chemical Society (GÖCH).

Who We Are?

After you design a couple thousand screens for various products, you’ll start to see that they’re basically all the same anyway.

YIW-LS sponsors and partners

Official Partner

The YIW-LS will be supported by ChemBioChem, Chemistry Europe. This partnership will moreover provide a strong platform to further promote the research of young investigators. The ChemBioTalents young researcher issues showcase the next generation of emerging scientists in the field, who are considered to be key figures in shaping the future of research at the interface of chemistry and biology. ChemBioChem’s Editor-in-Chief Ruben Ragg will join the YIW-LS and provide more information on the journal as well as ChemBioTalents in his talk.

YIW-LS speakers

Keynote Speakers

We are very happy to have two outstanding researchers joining this event as Keynote Speakers. Prof. Kathrin Lang and Prof. Nuno Maulide will provide insight into their exciting research with emphasis on the chemistry/biology interface.

Kathrin Lang

ETH Zürich

Kathrin Lang studied Chemistry at the University of Innsbruck, Austria where she obtained a PhD in 2008 working on chemically modified RNA to study ribosome catalysis and riboswitch folding. After postdoctoral research in the group of Venki Ramakrishnan on ribosome crystallography and in the lab of Jason Chin on synthetic biology at the MRC-LMB in Cambridge, UK, she was appointed in 2014 as a Rudolf Mössbauer Tenure Track Professor at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, where she was tenured and promoted to permanent W3 Professor for Synthetic Biochemistry in 2020. Since April 2021 she is Full Professor of Chemical Biology at the ETH Zürich, Switzerland. Her general research interests lie in the interdisciplinary area between Chemistry and Biology, applying concepts from Organic Chemistry to develop new tools to study and control biological systems. Her group is especially active in enabling and advancing approaches to expand the genetic code and in developing new in vivo chemistries that are amenable to physiological conditions, a combination that is ideally suited to address unmet challenges in studying and manipulating biological processes with a new level of spatial, temporal and molecular precision. Kathrin Lang has received several prestigious awards and fellowships, including an ERC Consolidator Grant, the Miklós Bodanszky Award of the European Peptide Society, the Otto Meyerhof Award of the German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Arnold Sommerfeld of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, the Thieme Chemistry Award, and the FEBS Anniversary Award of the Federation of European Biochemical Sciences.

Nuno Maulide

University of Vienna

Nuno Maulide was born in Lisbon (Portugal) in 1979. He is a Full Professor and Chair of Organic Synthesis at the University of Vienna (Austria) since 2013. His research interests focus on the exploration of high-energy intermediates in organic chemistry and have been acknowledged by several awards (including the Bayer Early Excellence Award 2012, the Heinz Maier Leibnitz Prize 2013, the Elisabeth Lutz Prize of the Austrian Academy of Sciences 2016, the Lieben Prize 2019 and three ERC Grants – StG 2011, CoG 2016 and PoC 2018). He has been named Scientist of the Year in Austria by the Associated Press Austria for 2018 and received the Tetrahedron Young Investigator Award 2020.

Who can participate?

Participants

Potential candidates will be nominated by the national EuChemS member societies. These researchers will receive further information regarding registration and schedule of the event. As the workshop will be held online, all members of the research groups of the participating young investigators will be given the opportunity to attend the scientific sessions.
